Mourning Angel

The Barbados Association of Journalists & Media Workers (BARJAM) is deeply saddened by the deaths of two local media stalwarts, which both occurred in a very short space of time over the last 24 hours.

We first recognize the contribution of Mr. Albert Branford, who had his formative years at the Advocate but went on to be known for his association with the Nation for the majority of his more than four-decade career.

Mr. Branford, a highly respected and award-winning journalist, was widely acclaimed for his political reporting and his candid and biting political insights in his column.

He leaves a legacy of excellence in the field that lives on with us who follow.

We extend condolences to his family and friends.

We also take this opportunity to remember the life of another media stalwart but who was more known for his exploits in broadcasting.

Indeed there are few voices quite as distinct and professional as Mr. Maurice Norville, who celebrated 50 years in broadcasting in 2022.

Mr. Norville was highly regarded for his approach to the profession and became extremely well known for his “Green Back Moment” which spurred greater knowledge of the English language among both young and old alike. Maurice held a high broadcast standard and leaves a legacy of excellence that will live on.

It is at times like these that we must reflect on the foundational figures of this noble media profession and seek to constantly strive for the excellent standards by which they lived and worked.

BARJAM therefore looks forward to honouring both of these legends appropriately in the future.

We take this opportunity to again express condolences to their families and friends on behalf of the wider media fraternity.
