The recent ten-day ?Reach One, Teach One? Summer Basketball Camp was hailed a success as it fulfilled several objectives including the awarding of full scholarships to local players.

?The work during the day and evening sessions with the participants was really good in terms of developing fundamentals,? Acting Director of Sports Dave Connor told SKNIS. ?The other successful end of it saw the recruitment of local basketball players to overseas schools on full scholarships.?

The first person to leave is Dane Rawlins of the Conaree Fireballs. The 20 year old has been playing organized basketball for the past four years. He started out playing with his community team in the St. Kitts Amateur Basketball Association League. When he migrated to St. Thomas last year to live with his father, Dane joined the local league and was a consistent player who averaged 25 points per game, earning rookie of the year and most valuable player honors as well as the scoring title.

He told SKNIS, that he packed his bags and came back to St. Kitts, eager to be a part of the Department of Sports organized camp, which was being facilitated by Coach Daniel Prince of the University of California, Irvine; along with Noll Billings of Missouri Baptist University.

John Spezia, the vice president of the National Junior College Athletic Association of Basketball Coaches Association in the United States also came to St. Kitts to work with the 130 participants for the event at the Conaree Sporting Complex.

Rawlins spent the morning sessions assisting the coaches who shared basketball fundamentals with less experienced persons. In the evening, he participated in advanced drills, which he said sharpened his overall game.

Acting director of sports Connor said that other persons who attended the camp have also been offered full scholarships.

The Kittitian director appreciated the efforts of Cable and Wireless, Gatorade, Moneygram, Avis Rent-A-Car, T.D.C. and Hertz in sponsoring this year’s camp.
