An afternoon of polo, community, and purpose will take center stage on January 24 as Soroptimist International of Barbados hosts Chukkas for Charity, a fundraising event aimed at supporting programmes that improve the lives of women and girls across the island.

“Chukkas for Charity” represents the heart of what Soroptimist stands for – turning collective action into meaningful change” said Patrice Alleyne, President of Soroptimist International of Barbados. “Through funds raised at events like this, we are able to continue our education initiatives such as the Sister Forward Academy, which works with female entrepreneurs and those who are in the job market, helping them prepare for interviews, etc. In addition, funds assist with our Frances Chandler Memorial Award, which provides a scholarship for women pursuing studies or working in the field of agriculture.”
She added that the organisation also focuses on addressing immediate needs faced by vulnerable women and girls: “We continue to provide direct assistance through initiatives like our Period Dignity Project, which supports young women through menstrual health education and the distribution of sanitary pads, ensuring dignity, confidence, and access to essential resources. This is why support of our fundraisers are essential and critical.”
Looking ahead, Ms. Alleyne said the organisation remains committed to expanding its reach and impact. “The funds raised from Chukkas for Charity will help us sustain these programmes while strengthening and expanding future initiatives that respond to the evolving needs of women and girls in Barbados.”
She also issued a call to the private sector.
“We are calling on corporate Barbados to stand with us. We have had the privilege of corporate Barbados supporting our initiatives in the past; however, we need more partners to join with us if we’re going to make a greater impact in our society. Supporting this work is an investment in building stronger families, healthier communities, and a more equitable society. When businesses partner with organisations like ours, the impact extends far beyond one event as it creates long-term social value.”
In addition to polo action, attendees can look forward to exciting prizes and a vibrant social atmosphere, making Chukkas for Charity both a memorable experience and a powerful opportunity to give back.
Soroptimist International of Barbados encourages members of the public, corporate partners, and community allies to attend and show their support for women and girls.
