Doctors and healthcare professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases (RMDs) will have the opportunity to do so this Saturday, October 11, 2025, during a Breakfast Medical Seminar hosted by Hope Foundation, at the Ross University School of Medicine, Two Mile Hill, St. Michael.
The seminar, themed “Managing Rheumatic & Musculoskeletal Diseases,” will bring together rheumatologists, physicians, and healthcare practitioners from Barbados, Trinidad, and the United States for an engaging exchange of medical knowledge and best practices. Speakers include Barbadian-born, United States-based Rheumatologist, Dr. Sharon Dowell, Consultant Rheumatologist and Associate Lecturer at the University of the West Indies St. Augustine Campus, Dr. Haramnauth Dyaanand and Professor of Pathology and Histology at the Ross University School of Medicine, Dr. Herman Reid. From them, participants will gain the latest insights into diagnosing and managing conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, psoriatic arthritis, gout, and osteoporosis—while exploring how cultural and lifestyle factors influence the course and management of these diseases in Caribbean populations.
Beyond advancing medical understanding, the event is reflective of Hope Foundation’s enduring commitment to fostering collaboration among healthcare professionals, strengthening regional networks, and supporting continuing medical education.

“When doctors come together to share their knowledge and experience, the entire healthcare community grows stronger,” Ms Weir observed, “This seminar is more than an academic exercise—it’s an opportunity to connect across borders, challenge assumptions, and ultimately improve the lives of patients living with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases. Our goal is to empower every participant to return to their practice inspired, informed, and ready to make a difference.”
Adding her perspective, Dr. Cindy Flower, Rheumatologist and Chair of Hope Foundation’s Medical Advisory Board, stated, “Rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases affect thousands of Caribbean people, often with significant delays in diagnosis and treatment. This seminar represents a critical step in ensuring that both specialists and general practitioners are equipped with the tools, awareness, and confidence to detect and manage these conditions early. Through knowledge sharing, we can change the course of these diseases and improve the quality of life for our patients.”
The seminar aims to empower healthcare professionals with practical tools and up-to-date clinical insights, focusing on addressing diagnostic and management delays to improve early detection and treatment. It seeks to bridge the gap between specialist and non-specialist perspectives, ensuring all physicians can effectively recognize and manage RMDs. Additionally, the seminar promotes professional development and supports continuous medical education.
