Aquatics Coach on Coaching Scholarship

Aquatics in Barbados is expected to get a boost in the coming months, when Coach Akeem Nurse returns from a 12-week training course at the University of Physical Education in Budapest, Hungary.

Nurse recently received an Olympic Solidarity scholarship facilitated by the National Olympic Academy of The Barbados Olympic Association Inc.(BOA). He is pursuing the International Coaching Course (ICC) with a specialization in general conditioning – including theory, methods, practice and training planning in the application areas of conditioning.

The ICC runs from September 16 to December 6, 2019 and is comprised of 120 theoretical and 180 practical teaching hours. In a chosen field of sports, participants receive instruction in Anatomy, Physiology, Sport Psychology, Sport Pedagogy, Sport Sociology, Sport Management, Sport Administration, Sport and Research and Sport Practice.

Coach Nurse is a fitting recipient of the scholarship, having experience as both an athlete and instructor. In the former role, he competed in several meets between 2009 and 2017, including the Goodwill Games, the RHAC Invitational, the Caribbean Island Swimming Championships CISC, the CARIFTA Games for Water Polo and the Central American and Caribbean Amateur Swimming Confederation (CCCAN) in Water Polo.

Since his competition days, he has been a swim instructor for Spring Board Youth Development Program, Dolphin Swim Club, Alpha Sharks, Hightide and Riptide Swim Club and a water polo coach. In 2018, Nurse was the Assistant Coach for the U19 Boys Team that participated in the Pan American Games and the Water Polo Coach for the U16 Boys Team for the 2018 and 2019 CARIFTA Games.

Vaneisha Cadogan, Director, Olympic Academy said that they have every confidence that the program will build on Nurse’s training exposure to date, and develop his knowledge and skills significantly.

Vaneisha said, “We anticipate that our national aquatics program will be the ultimate beneficiary when he returns, as he shares his expertise with other coaches and continues to work with our athletes.”

The ICC has been offered by the University, since 1971. Coach Nurse will now be counted among the more than 2000 participants, from upwards of 90 countries who over the past 48 years have received diplomas from the University.
