Badminton Tournament Attracts International Players

The Caribbean Regional Badminton Confederation (CAREBACO) Tournament 2019, scheduled to conclude in Barbados by August 29th,  attracted a cadre of international and regional badminton players.

Dionne Haynes

Given that 2020 is an Olympic year, many of the badminton athletes will be using this year’s CAREBACO Tournament to their advantage as a way to obtain Olympic qualifying points” explained Dionne Haynes, Chair of the CAREBACO 2019 Local Organising Committee.

Haynes also confirmed “this tournament has attracted 70 athletes from beyond the Caribbean region. Players will be representing the Czech Republic, Germany, Panama, USA, Canada, Italy, Luxembourg, Wales, Poland, Finland, Iceland, Slovakia, Suriname, Haiti, Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, Jamaica, England, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and Mongolia. Barbados will also be well represented, putting our player participation in the hundreds. Local, regional and international officials and supporters will also be present.”

Haynes also noted that the Barbados Badminton Association is thankful for the corporate sponsors, including the Barbados Olympic Association, who have supported the sport in general and this tournament in particular, given that a tournament of this stature requires significant human and financial resources. Divi Resort has come on board as the official hotel of the tournament and Harrogate Natural Spring Water (distributed by Niven Distributors) is the official water of the tournament.

The tournament incorporates 3 segments, including the CAREBACO International which runs from August 20-25, from 10am; and the Under 11 to Under 17 Individual Tournament which takes place from August 26-29, from 10am daily. All events will be held at the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium and admission is free.

Haynes noted that this event is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to witness badminton at a very high level. She added “given the range of players, we expect some exciting matches – come play your part and support the sport and our local team!”
