A Day at the Races in Barbados

Garrison Savannah Racecourse is one of the most popular sporting venues in Barbados as horse racing enthusiasts love heading to the course across the year to see the best thoroughbreds in action. The track is located in the historic Garrison area, which is situated just outside of Bridgetown.

If you have never been to Garrison Savannah before, here are some of the best reasons to visit one day…

Garrison Savannah holds the Barbados Gold Cup annually in either late February or early March in what is one of the most prestigious horse races anywhere in the world. The 1800 metres contest is open to three-year-olds and upwards and is the one race every jockey, trainer and owner involved in horse racing in the Caribbean wants to win. Trainer William Marshall has dominated this race over the last couple of decades as he has a record seven wins, with his most recent victory coming in 2003 when Thady Quill crossed the line in first place. This meeting attracts a huge crowd to the track, therefore it important to book early to avoid disappointment.

Have a Flutter

Those who attend Garrison Savannah on a race day enjoy a flutter on the racing. Before you enter the track you can have a look online for the horse racing betting odds if you want to place your bets well in advance. You don’t need to know too much about the horses to place a bet, many racegoers simply choose their favourite name, colour of silks or number to help make their selection. There are also a range of other bets you can place where you can scoop some huge returns if you are lucky enough to pick the winner of every race on the card. This is no easy feat, though; however, it can be won and you are rewarded well if you can do it.

Relaxed Dress Code

Unlike many racecourses around the world, Garrison Savannah has a relaxed policy in its track which really helps on a scorching hot day where you can stroll in wearing a t-shirt and shorts. There is, of course, a different policy for those attending in the Incitatus Members’ Lounge, Hospitality Lounge, Owners & Trainers and in one of the hospitality boxes at the venue.

Children Are Welcome

Not only are children permitted to enter the grandstand at Garrison Savannah at a reduced rate, they are made very welcome with various activities planned for them at certain meetings across the year.

Follow the Barbados Triple Crown Series

The Barbados Triple Crown series consists of three races at Garrison Savannah across the year and is open to three-year-olds. Each contest is run over a different trip therefore if a horse is able to be successful in all three, they go down in history as being a very special runner. The first race is the Barbados Guineas which is run in April, the second leg is the Midsummer Creole Classic which was won by Brave Star earlier this month, while the series concludes with the Barbados Derby in August.

Enjoy your next day out at Garrison Savannah and hopefully, you have some luck go your way on the racing.
