Mustardseed Production Presents? “Duelling Voices” at the Daphne Joseph Hackett Theatre

Mustardseed presents Duelling Voices, 20th & 21st January at the Daphne Joseph Hackett Theatre. Adapted by Mustardseed Youth Theatre Ensemble and directed by Luci Hammans.

In the confines of an unsupervised classroom, with nothing to do, students play a confrontational game of dialogue, call, response and heated repartee. This develops into an intense exploration which eventually reveals one of the most pressing and prevalent issues concerning adolescent sexuality.

Written by Zeno Obi Constance the Trinidadian play “Duelling Voices” tells the story of an inappropriate relationship between a teacher and student and the very Caribbean reactions of those closest to the situation.

In this Barbadianised version, the ensemble uses devised scenes, physical and natural theatre to further navigate the impact of this subject on both a personal and societal level.

In order to achieve this goal the ensemble focuses on the importance of conversation by using many kinds of duologues, not only with the many two-hander scenes between the lively and relatable characters, but also a it is a wider conversation between the actors and the audience on a subject that needs to be discussed.
