West Indies squad named for Las Vegas Invitational America’s Cup elite division
The Barbados Rugby Football Union delighted to announce the West Indies squad for the Las Vegas Invitational America’s Cup elite division. The tournament will be played from March 2nd to the 4th.
The team is comprised of players from five countries including Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica and Bermuda. These players were selected primarily from the recent Rugby Barbados World Sevens in Barbados.
The team is a combination of seasoned veterans and up and coming stars.
Two of the players selected, Claudius Butts and Andre Cabrera played on the 2009 squad and one player, Sean Ward played on the “A” squad.
Joe Whipple, coach of the West Indies team commented, “When we started to contact players concerning their eligibility, they responded in minutes. Clearly, to be selected to play for the West Indies is important to the players in our region. I am very honored to be working with these players, many of whom I have coached and some I have not. We are thankful to our benefactor who had the vision to revive an important legacy in West Indian rugby. Rugby Sevens has significantly improved over the last few years in the region. The fitness and skill levels and knowledge of the game have improved despite the lack of funding for the sport. I am confident that the players will wear the West Indies jersey with huge pride and this will be reflected in their efforts on the pitch.”
The organizers are currently seeking sponsorship opportunities to fund the team in future.
