The Maria Holder Memorial Trust expanding charitable acts to Antigua & Barbuda

Barbados is not the only CARICOM member to benefit from the generosity of the Maria Holder Memorial Trust; this was confirmed by the Trust’s Chair and co-founder Christopher Holder.

Mr Holder was addressing participants at the launch of the Maria Holder Memorial Nursery in Gall Hill, Christ Church and expressed gratitude how the Minister of Education and key personnel from Antigua and Barbuda were in attendance at the event. The Trust already has completed projects in Grenada, and plan to add beyond their assistance to the Buckley Preschool in Antigua.

The Registered Charity is in the process of training 75 educators for Special Needs and Infant Care in Boston, it is a series of workshops which will conclude in June this year – the first cohort of which include some of the teachers at Gall Hill and similar plans are in store for a corresponding branch in Antigua.

Mr Holder stated the nursery at Sharon is essentially a prototype while the Gall Hill complex is the flagship in a project of six nurseries to be completed in the next 3 years, The next nursery will be in Oldbury, St Philip and Mr Holder confirmed construction concludes by Friday 13th January and admissions to the school start by the 31st.

The Gall Hill Nursery is specifically constructed for toddlers, with water fountains placed at three feet off the ground and an oversized xylophone in the foam-rubber paved playground which has climbing incline as well as chairs and tables designed for youngsters to have enjoyable class time for learning and more…

Not only the very young drew the attention of the Trust’s Chair, Mr Holder was alarmed at conditions of the Geriatric Hospital and has vowed to make a significant difference there as well, he pointed out Barbados has an aging population and therefore needs to show as much care for senior citizens as they would themselves once older.

Prime Minister Freundel Stuart was in attendance to pull the curtain on the commemorative plaque for the occasion; this was witnessed by some Cabinet Colleagues for the occasion including Education Minister Ronald Jones, Health Minister John Boyce and Housing Minister Denis Kellman.

The Maria Holder Memorial Trust is a registered Charity, creating longevity. The trust was founded by Christopher Holder and Chester Brewster, in memory of Christopher’s Mother, Maria Holder.

Maria had made Barbados her home since 1978 until her sudden and untimely death in February 2004. It is the wish of Christopher and Chester to ensure that her vision is fulfilled through this Charity bearing her name.
