I was pleased DC is finally getting their act together in Suicide Squad, even if borrowing heavily from Marvel’s formulae – but it fell a wee bit short for different reasons this time around as opposed to the Wayne Vs. Kent fiasco, it’s more like you have a Ferrari and cruise it like a first-time bicycle pedaller?

Jared Leto had a great laugh as the Clown Prince of Crime, but no indication of his psychoses like Jack Nicholson nor Heath Ledger, still not sure about using tattoos and a grill for "Mr J" either?

Leto needed a gimmick which can compete with “This town needs an enema!” or “Wanna see this pencil disappear?” even TV’s Cesar Romero had a bit more Oomph, Leto was almost heroic in that he would be forever rescuing Harley Quinn who is doing quite well on her own…

Margot Robbie is about the only one who was allowed to expand her role full throttle, while I understand they were avoiding an NC-17 or worse, the Dark Knight trilogy had no qualms skittering the edge of madness and genius…

Will Smith, the erstwhile partner of Robbie in Focus, was also close to potential as a black Deadshot, he was in my view better than the comic books where the original was almost a poor man's Tony Stark.

Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang was glorious as an energy drink-guzzling Aussie villain who’d rather slug back a Foster’s Lager, palming corpse’s jewellery and having a stuffed unicorn smuggled in his jacket which never developed. Nor his fixation of kukri knives favored by Gurkha soldiers…

I was looking for a scene where he was ready to cave in, until his beloved toy was snatched or revealed, then he went hardcore berserk – but no such luck?

Viola Davis as Amanda Waller is no stretch since this is an expanded version of How To Get Away With Murder, almost stereotyping here - perhaps Kerry Washington did not have the chops nor Halle Berry? If DC can stretch for Joker why not do the same here, they are cursed with playing safe? If they are going to beat Marvel, you have to act as though there's no net...

The soundtrack is rich and luscious and I can see it doing well on its own, the writing and directing needed to follow the music, instead of David Ayer they could try another David… Lynch, but then again, he is way out there – but that’s what you have to try, eh?

The premise for Midway City was a brilliant twist which I won’t give away, their use of tablets and smartphones was very effective and rapidly modernised the concept which began in the late 80’s in DC print.

Cameos from Flash and Batman were judiciously arranged and didn’t overpower the villains (ironic pun)…

Despite my caterwauling, I still prefer to look for a sequel from Suicide Squad than expect the long touted Dawn of Justice, while Gal Godot as Wonder Woman in World War 1 looks hot! Great choice on Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, I just hope the film matches the trailer?

Meanwhile, why not try texting “I LOVE MOVIES” to 3456 on your Flow smartphone? That’s how I got to see this… $1.00 per text and if you win you not only get a free movie voucher, but an extra $15 either towards either another ticket for a pal, or you can use it towards popcorn and other goodies at the Olympus in Sheraton Mall! I have seen 8 films this way since March!
