Barbadian Press Freedom – If you Graze not Grate, then it’s Great!

“Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds!” – Marcus Garvey

There are those who still get a surprise to learn Bob Marley‘s famous song was a quotation and not an original statement. The quotation is utterly appropriate as we proceed to enter Emancipation and August to examine Press Freedom… It has been a while since we looked at what passes for open journalism on the supposed gem of the Caribbean Sea, once again Police and BGIS’ mailing lists seem to be unaware of this website’s existence?

That’s strange since Abyz Newslinks which track all over the world since 2000 have acknowledged this website for quite some time and no problem listing it either?

I attended a National Societal Consultation at Two Mile Hill, after Prime Minister Freundel Stuart regurgitated history for almost 3 quarters of an hour (his most interesting contribution was to quote Harry Potter’s Dumbledore on choices).

I made the mistake of declaring I want a refund on my last 45 minutes and was told by all present that this was the Prime Minister speaking, and I reiterated that is exactly why I demand compensation since a leader should be more pithy...

I even went so far as to state Stephen Lashley spoke best as he declared what he’s done, what he wants to do next and why it needs to be done if Barbados is to advance successfully!

This is how MP's need to address Barbadians, I remonstrated, oops! Nope, dearie!

For the last few days I have had to download PDF summaries direct from BGIS website when I need to know what Government is up to, it WAS emailed every day between 4 and 6 BEFORE my Cromwellian assessment of Fumble Freundel’s speech…

I have used bits and pieces from this event while on the air at 90.1 FM since they have a more mainstream palate, but in person and here I have been more grating than grazing in that I am not a sheep which bleats politely. I am also aware one cannot say anything and everything, there is a need for supporting claims with facts and evidence be it photos, video or audio and corroborating sources stating similar observations independently arrived at. However, such individuality can lead to interesting shunning from other quarters…

The following is correspondence i received from the Police on the 13th of July, in respecting National Security I have refrained from listing the private eMail address and Time Date stamp which can reveal the IP address involved, but here is verbatim what was issued not just to me but Nation, Loop, Advocate, VOB, CBC and Barbados Today;-

Media

On behalf of the Commissioner of Police, we invite a member or members of your media agency to cover a Promotion Ceremony to be held at the Prince Cave Auditorium, Band Headquarters, District A Police Complex, Station Hill, St. Michael, on Thursday July 14, 2016 to begin at 9:30 am.

Please note that no questions pertaining to any on-going issues will be entertained at this event.

Thank you for your consideration.

The paragraph in red is my emphasis, my regular readers may well be aware how outraged I was in this putrid effort in muzzling Barbadian media, so my response was swift and not unmeasured;-

I operate in a purported democracy and I hope I’ll continue to receive updates after this, but since there are no questions – eMail me the statement and photos while I attend a conference which purports to have more democracy than this event

Again the coloring and emphasis is mine alone, otherwise I used plain font when I responded to the RBPF plus all the other Media houses who received the note, in other words, I hit “Reply All” and if Barbadian Media possessed some form of genitalia they should have banded with me and ignored the event. I even called key Police personnel and am yet to gain a reply to any message left… I have not seen correspondence since this exchange almost 3 weeks ago

(In 1994 in St Lucia, Vaughn Lewis attempted to do a White Paper on how Press there could or could not do stories; even to what questions should be askedALL of the Lucian media banned every Government event there for 2 weeks until Dr Lewis rescinded the White Paper and tabled it indefinitely! More’s the pity Barbadians do not have the same fire; it was last seen in 1937 and 1816 before that…)

CLICK FOR BIGGER: August 2014

As the result of being a lone wolf like ex-firebrand journalist Clennell Wickham, I have received no updates from Police up to this very moment, but then I said I would not be surprised if this should happen like in 2014 when I did a meme on a suggestion that Crime was down by 16 per cent. I did not get to attend a press conference from the RBPF until February this year…

Barbadians fail to realise that if everyone was to be “obnoxious” as they deem me, then no one would be ignored or dismissed as a political leaning of this or that, it would stop situations where reporters formerly of one paper who go on to become Sports Editors elsewhere being possibly victimised by the Opposition of the day…

When I query the current Opposition for their stance on Education I am removed from a Mailing list until I complain…

The Nation itself has been the indirect victim of a Central Bank under the stewardship of a Governor who has held no televised gatherings in over 2 years, a fact which I repeatedly emphasise on 90.1 FM as I have been given the latitude to provide context for listeners, once I have the facts and evidence to support these elements of reporting – storytelling that can easily be emulated by all other News services here, except we stop ourselves…

Much like what Pogo alluded to in the 1970's when he defined Mankind's greatest enemy...

Much like what Pogo alluded to in the 1970’s when he defined Mankind’s greatest enemy…

Once local media choose to bleat and ruminate on cud or munch new tufts without dissent, then it is no problem, but as soon as one person (me) dares to ask why are we eating grass? Rather than examine my concern, the effort is for other sheep to bleat as loudly as possible to drown out my observation…

Grazing is great it means whatever is fed is digested and the illusion remains, however it appears grating grazes whatever is left of a conscience in gubernatorial departments. Grab some band-aids folks, I have just begun… This message has a global reach!
