UWI Social Sciences Dean clashes with Bajan Reporter at Public-Private Launch: Select business students in for Tuition ease

In what should have been a simple announcement of good news, ended up as a clash between the Dean of the faculty of Social Sciences and the Bajan Reporter over what makes proper coverage of an event, it soon escalated to a point where the blogger urged Dr Justin Robinson to urge the Governor of the Central Bank to resume quarterly Press Briefings…

This unfolded during an official launch to announce a renewed partnership between the Cave Hill School of Business and the private sector, during the speeches - Winston Alleyne, Member Relations Executive of the City Of Bridgetown credit union said how COB was aware of the challenges members were facing when pursuing higher education.

It was revealed how students preparing to attend the Cave Hill School of Business (CHSB) and who take out loans at the City of Bridgetown Co-operative Credit Union (COB) can get a chance to change their loans into grants, as a result of a partnership between the two institutions. Dr Robinson should’ve let Mr Alleyne make his declaration, but interrupted Alleyne and instructed to the reporters present this is what is worthwhile in a story…

Like the proverbial USA serpentine flag of 1776 “Don’t Tread On Me,” the Bajan Reporter pounced & asked if Robinson is trying to tell the media how to do their work. Robinson said BR is known to be “mischievous,” and attempted to laugh off the fray…

Then BR said it's no surprise Robinson would do so, since as a Director of the Central Bank, he's accustomed to attempting to control the media. The Dean said he's only a CBB Director and BR reminded Robinson he can make recommendations to the Governor on best practices with media.

Dr Jeannine Comma sought to oil the troubled waters, and asked Mr Alleyne to resume, the COB officer said the CHSB would provide criteria, as well as the number of students who can be eligible.

Meanwhile, Nicola Harris, HR manager at First Citizens (Barbados) Ltd said the five-year partnership between the bank and the CHSB resulted in many benefits, with the bank offering specialised courses plus funding for various initiatives at the facility since 2012.

Harris added so far the alliance enabled the bank to offer classes to “selected participants” enrolling in the Executive Masters in Business Administration and the Executive Diploma in Management programmes, covering full tuition costs for the duration of these programmes.

Additionally, she said, First Citizens supported CHSB through a range of other drives as well as with infrastructural development and case studies for teaching purposes.
