Law enforcement in St. Kitts and Nevis has made inroads into several cases due to an increase in police vigilance, intelligence and public information.

Acting Commissioner of Police Stafford Liburd reported significant progress in several homicide and non-fatal shootings as well as the interception of contraband destined for Her Majesty’s Prison including illegal narcotics and cellular phones.

"We are letting the public know that we will not waiver or tire in our efforts to reduce crime and violence in our country," he said, at a press conference hosted by Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris. "As I speak, the police are actively pursuing those who intend to use misguided or vulnerable youth to perpetrate serious crime."

Kittitian police have increased random stop and searches as well as traffic stops in recent weeks which have been successful in reassuring citizens and deterring antisocial elements. Security forces have also been seen more frequently walking through communities in rural areas and engaging with schools, churches and social groups.

“Going forward the general public will be reassured that the police is not only here to enforce the law and to arrest [persons that run afoul of it] but we are also involved in rehabilitative measures so that we can have a more productive society,” explained Assistant Commissioner of Police Vaughan Henderson.

Prime Minister Harris thanked the men and women in law enforcement for their continued efforts to enhance public safety and in keeping with such, announced that a deployment of soldiers from the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force will be assisting police in security operations in Nevis on a regular basis.
