Barbadians are invited to join the Barbados Diabetes Foundation for an interactive lecture on Sunday 14th June, 5:30 pm at Hilton Barbados, Needham’s Point.

Effective diabetes care is essential to reducing the physical, psychological and economic impact of this chronic disease that affects at least 20% of Barbadians, with trends showing this figure as rising.

Diabetes care is not only a medical responsibility. It is each patient’s responsibility. Both physicians and patients need to take a team approach in managing the condition. What does multidisciplinary care mean to a diabetic patient? Are patients aware they need the support of a nutritionist, a podiatrist, a nurse educator, a mental health counsellor in addition to their doctor for optimal diabetes care?

This public lecture will explore a team approach to effective diabetes care. It will share with the diabetic, the family, the friend or the curious individual the role of each team member, and what they mean to individual care.

How is important is having your eyes checked? Have you ever been educated on diabetes? Is it just “having sugar” to you? Knowing and understanding diabetes is a key part of blood sugar control and minimising complications which can occur including blindness, diabetic foot, amputation and kidney disease.

Featured speakers will be top Canadian Diabetes Nurse Educator Anne Belton and a local team of experts in diabetes, podiatry, general medicine and more. The public is invited to participate in this interactive presentation on Sunday 14th June, and prepare many questions, to assist them in improving their knowledge in caring for themselves or friends and family who are diabetic.
