UNNA Luxury Resorts & Residences and ICBL are joint title-sponsors of the Barbados Polo Club’s annual four-game tournament against the Cheshire Polo Club, which starts at the Club’s Holders Polo Field in St James on Sunday (March 1st) and will include at least one 12-goal match, “the highest level of polo seen in the island for some years.”
At a Press Conference held at the Holders Club House, Cheshire captain Oliver Taylor said: “We’re bringing a mixed squad of players from which we can field a maximum 12-goal side, which will be the highest level of polo seen in the island in some years.” Those four players are Taylor himself, who plays off a four-goal handicap, Johnny Coddington (4), James Fielding (2) and Charlie Walton (2).
Club President Wayne Archer said: “Cheshire always field an excellent calibre of players to try and beat Barbados and we know that this tour will continue the high standard of polo already seen this year with some very close-scoring matches.” The final team line-ups for Sunday’s opening game are not yet decided, as local players and their horses are currently involved in the Roger Gooding Memorial Trophy matches.
Taylor added: “Our huge red army is here to party, they get involved in the matches, which are always tight . . . but, whatever happens, they stay behind afterwards.”
Director of Sales & Marketing for UNNA, Alistair Brown, said: “Sponsorship of polo is a really simple thing for us. Barbados is uniquely placed in the Caribbean when it comes to high quality sports, providing something a little bit different. UNNA Resorts & Residences welcomes couples and families from all over the world to our shores . . . these great events help us do that and make Barbados more widely known.”
Alex Tasker, Senior Vice President Business Development and Marketing for ICBL added: “ICBL is proud to be part of the Cheshire Tour, in a season which has already seen play and sportsmanship of a very high level. I expect even greater rivalry between these two teams and would encourage all to bring their family and friends.”
Popular Holetown restaurant The Mews will be in charge of the featured food station at Holders on both Sundays, the Stoli Cocktail Bar will be in full swing, and there will also be a chance to taste exquisite hand-made delicacies from the island’s Green Monkey Chocolatier. UNNA and ICBL will also be hosting their own corporate guests, treating them to a “Taste of UNNA“, giving patrons the opportunity to try platters from the kitchens of 13/59, the new fine dining restaurant at Port Ferdinand.
The Big Hat Polo Party on Sunday, March 8th will bring the 2015 Cheshire Tour to a thrilling climax. As the Final match is played out on the field, spectators will have the chance to be winners, too: patrons who arrive wearing a hat can enter a draw to win a pair of Bvlgari diamond earrings, UNNA will also have a draw, with a week’s stay at Saint Peter’s Bay on offer to the lucky winner, with further fun-filled activities to be confirmed during the week.
Always Summer, with an outlet at Lime Grove in Holetown, will be on hand with a display, including hats – useful for patrons who arrive and wish to enter the Top Hat draw – and fun giveaways. With the chance to sample world-famous Haagen Dazs ice cream and specials from Banks beer, there will be something for everyone at Holders.
