Same Sex Marriage

Great Britain just revealed how the first gay wedding took place in the Dominican Republic between a UK citizen and a Dominican on 30 December 2014 at the UK Consulate in Santo Domingo. The Dominican Constitution does not recognize same-sex marriage, so weddings cannot be carried out in Dominican territory.

The UK Embassy announced the enforcement as of 3 June 2014 of the Consular Marriage and Marriages under Foreign Law Order 2014 whereby same-sex weddings can be carried out at selected British Consulates abroad, including the Dominican Republic.

The British Consulate is considered extraterritorial. The UK Consulate did not reveal the names of the newlyweds.
