Polytechnic Students Impressed with “Pop-the-Hood”

The work of three promising students from the Automotive Engineering Programme of the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic has been lauded by motorists who benefitted from a series of “Pop-the-Hood” events held at Sol and Shell Service Stations.

Pop-the Hood was part of the recently concluded “Win with Shell Helix” promotion, offering motorists free five-point automotive checks on tyres, fluids, lights, brakes, and horn function, while also taking note of several other key components of the vehicle.

Guided by instructor Ras Babb, and with the experienced Adrian “The Autodoc” Barker also on hand, the trio of Akel Bailey, Shea Woodroffe and Jatione Roach, completed an automotive inspection “dream team” which proved very popular with motorists who lined up to pop their hoods.

Six Pop-the-Hood events were held during the two-month long promotion, and the students checked and reported on hundreds of vehicles, receiving an overwhelmingly positive response. Many drivers testified they were thoroughly impressed by the manner and approach of the students.

One satisfied car owner had this to say: “This is a really good idea and I think the guys are doing an excellent job. The car was recently serviced, including changing a distributor seal, but the guys said my oil quality was poor. I wasn’t aware that there are two seals and I only changed the outer one. I’m very impressed.”

Kirk King, Sales and Marketing Manager of SOL (BARBADOS) LTD., which distributes Shell Helix in Barbados, said the Pop-the-Hood component of the Win with Shell Helix promotion aimed to both reward customers and give the students an opportunity to hone their skills interacting with consumers in a real-world setting.

Pop-the-Hood was a resounding success, and I must say thanks to customers, staff, and our team of automotive engineers led by The Autodoc and instructor Ras Babb. We were particularly pleased with the work of this terrific trio of young automotive engineers. They impressed everyone with their skills, customer service, diligence and dedication to the task, and certainly upheld Sol’s commitment to delivering world-class products and services to all our customers,” King stated.

The “Win with Shell Helix” promotion offered customers the chance to win an array of fabulous prizes, while Facebook participants won cash in a “Spot the Bottle” segment, by posting selfies taken with a supersized inflatable bottle of Shell Helix Ultra.

Shell Helix motor oils are distributed in Barbados by SOL (BARBADOS) LTD. Sol uses the Shell brand under license across its regional Shell Service Station network and is the sole distributor of Shell’s fuels and lubricants, which are fully backed by Shell’s world-class technical expertise.
