In his 40th Anniversary message, CARDI’s Executive Director, Dr. Arlington Chesney paid homage to the staff of the Institute, giving ‘a special thanks to all of the management and staff who have worked for the last 40 years under very challenging circumstances to enable the Institute to be a meaningful contributor to the development of the rural and agricultural sectors up to today‘.

One such staff member is Mr. Martin Lindo, a Field Technician at the CARDI Belize office, who describes working at the Institute as ‘Phenomenal‘. Further stating that the major benefit of working at CARDI ‘is acquiring vast practical and theoretical knowledge in a wide range of agricultural field disciplines, by spending 60-70% of work time out in the fields doing practical research work and data collection‘.

Young Dr. Nickeisha Reid, Ph.D of Jamaica echoes Martin’s words stating that she is ‘extremely grateful to the CARDI team for the IPM-CRSP scholarship that I was awarded to finance my studies. The experience was most rewarding and a pivotal part of my professional development. I benefited [as a] recipient of professional coaching from Mrs. Harris as to the rigors technical reporting in an agricultural research institution. By organizing visits to the weed ecology unit of the Pennsylvania State University and providing mentorship from renown weed scientist, Dr. Dave Mortensen, the scholarship helped to broaden my understanding of what we can accomplished in organic agriculture and weed management. The entire team at CARDI was always very supportive and, were excellent advisors who made it possible for the thesis to be completed; it was a privilege to have the ears of a team of experienced soil scientists and entomologists when planning and implementing field research.’

What interests her about the agriculture sector? She says ‘my interest in the agriculture arose out of a desire to help develop more eco-friendly and sustainable farming systems. I was drawn to the opportunity, that this sector presented, to make a positive impact in lives of people in rural communities.

And as to where she sees CARDI in the next 40 years? “I see CARDI transforming regional agriculture; being the first stop (for private and public sector) for leadership/direction in agricultural pursuits; providing actors at all levels of the value chain with modern and appropriate technology (component, process) options, which lead to globally competitive products while preserving and sustaining our people and environment; and making agriculture a more profitable venture for Caribbean people.”
