Digicel (Barbados) Limited recently showed its concern for the health of Barbadian women, in addition to continuing its support for the fight against breast cancer.

During the month of October, which is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness month, Digicel partnered with the Breast Screening programme of the Barbados Cancer Society, as well as the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), to provide free breast screening to women in and around the Deacons, St. Michael district, as well members of the Digicel staff.

On Saturday October 18th and Saturday October 25th, Digicel was responsible for the mobile breast screening unit being set up at the office of the YWCA in Deacons, St. Michael, where women in and around the community, as well as those from further afield, were invited to come and receive a free screening on the spot.

One week later, Digicel staff were invited to undergo the free screening, when the mobile unit was stationed outside of the telecommunication company’s head office in Warrens.

Commenting on the partnership, President of the YWCA, Tamara Brathwaite, said:

"The YWCA of Barbados is very pleased to have had the opportunity to partner with Digicel to increase the awareness of Breast Cancer in our community. While most females maybe aware of this disease, the importance of early detection through screening must be constantly reiterated, as it increases the chance of survival. Our Association is committed to participating in any initiative that seeks to educate women about the importance of loving and taking care of their bodies. We thank Digicel for working with us and remind women that we are our sisters' keeper and must continue to support each other."

Marketing Executive with Digicel (Barbados) Limited, Randy Howard, spoke about the initiative:

In previous years we had arranged for the Breast Screening Unit to visit our office, however, noting the high number of breast cancer cases in Barbados, we held the view that there were still not enough persons out there getting checked for this deadly condition. We therefore saw this initiative as a good one to raise awareness among the persons in the communities we targeted, with the goal of getting them to spread the word to their friends and family. We really want all Barbadians to understand the value of early detection.”
