The next time you see a Constable gesticulating, he may not be flagging you down for a ticket – he may well be communicating with the hearing impaired… Station Sergeant Stephen Griffith recently indicated how the Force will engage its Officers with sign-language training.

The Crime Prevention Officer and Station Sergeant In-Charge of Community Relations says Police must be able to communicate with all citizens regardless of method, nationality or disability and therefore using sign language is another component in making the RBPF a more well rounded entity when handling issues, be they complaints or queries from guilty or innocent.

While pleased with Police’s proactiveness by interacting with the disabled community, Senator Kerryann Ifill nevertheless wanted for Police to be as vigourous in reprimands when encountering those who do not respect places meant for those with disabilities to be able to park more easily {PLEASE CLICK ON FOLLOWING ICON FOR FULL AUDIO, SMARTPHONE OR TABLET USERS PLEASE CLICK ON Senator Ifill‘s NAME FOR THE LINK}

This comment made me recall when there was a time when an Officer used a disabled spot and was caught by the Media, when I mentioned it to a colleague during this press conference – it appears I was overheard by Acting Commissioner of Police  Tyrone Griffith, who was very embarrassed and sought to make a clarification via half-baked apology {PLEASE CLICK ON FOLLOWING ICON FOR FULL AUDIO, SMARTPHONE OR TABLET USERS PLEASE CLICK ON Commissioner Griffith‘s NAME FOR THE LINK}

Senator Ifill commended the RBPF for its ongoing efforts with the Barbados Council for the Disabled. She said by having the formatted material available, the Police, in keeping with their goals, guarantees all Barbadians regardless of disability or ability will be safe and secure.

“It’s our privilege to be able to assist in producing these documents in an accessible format so that all of our citizens, all of our members, can understand and learn. Too often information is kept in a format that we cannot access, many times we feel left out, ignored and not appreciated. Today we are indeed a part of our society,” the Senator disclosed.
