Dr. Rebecca Klemm, “The Numbers’ Lady” to Promote STEM in Barbados June 1-4, 2014

The U.S. Embassy in Bridgetown is pleased to host Dr. Rebecca Klemm, “The Numbers Lady” and Creative and Executive Director of NumbersAlive!, to lead a series of math and science workshops with teachers, coaches, parents, and students in Barbados. The Numbers Lady will use her exuberant presentation skills to explain the complexities of math and science in everyday language, reinforcing math and science concepts through sports such as cricket, football, and track and field.

The Numbers Lady's visit will culminate in an exciting and free, public presentation demonstrating the interplay between sports and math and science on Wednesday, June 4 at 7pm at the 3Ws Pavilion at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill campus co-sponsored by the National Council of Parent -Teacher Associations. Parents are encouraged to visit the U.S. Embassy Bridgetown's Facebook page and post math and science-related questions which they would like the Numbers' Lady to address at the public event.

The U.S. Embassy expects that the benefits of Dr. Klemm’s workshop series will be two-fold: classroom teachers will be able to enlist coaches to reinforce the principles taught in the classroom, and coaches will benefit by having student athletes who better understand the science of various sports and therefore improve their performance.

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is a proven and important driver of economies, and this program plays an active role in ensuring children’s success in school, strengthening the cadre of students interested in STEM fields. The promotion of STEM though sports also aligns with the Embassy’s youth outreach strategy, as well as CARICOM’s youth development goals which include educational opportunities and sports for all youth.
