Salt is one of the world’s oldest words in English, along with apple, tin and gold… It is a measurement of what we earn at our jobs – salary. If one treats information with a grain of salt, this means you have your doubts as to its veracity and it needs flavour to digest – since salt was also an ancient means of preservative apart from a means of making bland or stale food more palatable.

As methods to ensure food tasted great and stayed fresh changed over the centuries, salt became less crucial as a staple… In fact, as health improves and Mankind’s life expectancy continues to stretch, salt is almost viewed as an enemy to longevity and one’s heart among other functions. but changing this perception will be an intriguing challenge indeed, especially if you pursue it from an older generation’s perspective.

Now, the Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP) revealed a partnership with the National NCD Commission, Ministry of Health, the Barbados Diabetes Foundation and Knights Health Advantage Club in combating non-communicable diseases (NCD's).

BARP will use a two pronged approach based on education and awareness, as well as saltreduction in the diet as part of a campaign titled BARP On The Move: Just A Pinch! This campaign is expected to have a significant impact on the management, reduction and prevention of non-communicable diseases.

While the primary target group of this campaign will be BARP’s 40,000 plus members, it is expected that thesecondary beneficiaries; households, families and friends of BARP members will significantly increase the reach of this campaign, making it one of national importance.

Sir Trevor Hassell while pleased Barbados has fewer smokers each year, he nevertheless expressed concern at the level of salt usage – however, he praised the current Healthcare plan of Barbados – is this prominent BARP member in a minority? BARP is one of the largest, if not the most populated, NGO’s in Barbados with over 40,000 in its ranks and growing each year as the Barbadian populace ages.
