The newly-appointed Attorney General of the Turks and Caicos Islands is Rhondalee Braithwaite- Knowles, the daughter of a retired Barbadian Police Officer in the Turks and Caicos Islands, Pastor Frederick Braithwaite.

Governor Peter Beckingham announced the appointment on Monday, 24 February 2014.

Mr Braithwaite is originally from Drax Hall, St George, and is now pastoring the Bible Baptist Church on Grand Turk. He said about this appointment that he is well pleased to the point of tears as he reflects on the journey his daughter has taken, up to this momentous occasion, and that his desire and prayers for her have been realized. His one regret is that her mother is not here to share this historical moment, but he knows that she is smiling down on their daughter.

The position was advertised in the TCI local press and internationally. Twenty-six applications were received with five candidates selected for interview.

Governor Beckingham said:Rhondalee Knowles was the outstanding candidate in an open and keenly fought selection process, which included international candidates from the Caribbean and Europe. I have worked closely with Rhondalee since my arrival last October, and she has always impressed me with her professional judgement, energy, and willingness to make tough decisions. I look forward to continuing to work with her in what is one of the key positions in TCI life. That the TCI is now one of a few UK Overseas Territories to have an Attorney General from its own citizens, is an added bonus. This is a good day for Rhondalee, a great example to others, and something we should all celebrate.”

Ms Braithwaite-Knowles was Acting Attorney General of the TCI since October 2013. She said "I am delighted at the appointment as the first Turks and Caicos Islander and first woman to hold the post of Attorney General in the Turks and Caicos Islands. This has been the result of many years of hard work and dedication to duty and love of country. Having risen through the ranks in the Chambers, I am proud to have attained the top position.

This accomplishment also speaks to the quality of the legal training provided by the University of the West Indies, and Cave Hill Law Faculty in particular and the Council of Legal Education. I am thankful to my family for their love and support, but I am most grateful to God for his faithfulness.”

The Barbadian community in Turks and Caicos joined with Turks and Caicos Islanders in congratulating Ms Braithwaite-Knowles and wish her continued success with her appointment.
