HBO Latin America announced its programming for 2014, which includes big screen hits, award-winning original TV series and other highly acclaimed productions. Headlining HBO’s stellar programming this year are blockbuster titles such as Grown Ups 2, Iron Man 3 and Monsters University, as well as new seasons of HBO original productions like Game of Thrones and Veep, plus the series finales of True Blood, The Newsroom and Boardwalk Empire. On MAX, viewers will enjoy the best international content and the most award-winning films, documentaries and series.

Series

HBO kicked off the year with the premiere of two new original series, True Detective and Looking, as well as the third season of the Emmy® and Golden Globe®winning series Girls, created by and starring Lena Dunham. The original comedy series takes a comic look at the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of girls in their 20s living in New York City.

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson star in True Detective as Louisiana detectives Rust Cohle and Martin Hart, whose lives collide and entwine during a 17-year hunt for a killer, ranging from the original investigation of a bizarre murder in 1995 to the reopening of the case in 2012. Michelle Monaghan plays Hart's wife, Maggie, who struggles to keep her family together as the men in her life become locked in a cycle of violence and obsession.

In Looking, three friends in San Francisco explore the sometimes-overwhelming options available to a new generation of gay men. Created by Michael Lannan and executive produced by Andrew Haigh and Sarah Condon, the show stars Jonathan Groff, Frankie J. Alvarez and Murray Bartlett. Special guest stars include Russell Tovey and Scott Bakula.

The long-awaited fourth season of the HBO original drama series Game of Thrones premieres on April 6th, simultaneously with the United States. Created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the series is an adaptation to the fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin.

Also returning to HBO for a third season is the Emmy(r) nominated comedy series Veep, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as United States Vice President Selina Meyer, along with the series finales of three critically acclaimed original productions: True Blood (in its seventh season, starring Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer and Alexander Skarsgard), The Newsroom (in its third season, starring Golden Globe(r) nominee Jeff Daniels) and Boardwalk Empire (in its fifth season, starring Emmy(r) nominee and Golden Globe(r) winner Steve Buscemi).

Movies

In 2014, HBO Latin America will continue to have exclusive rights to the biggest content from major movie studios, including hit films such as the comedy Grown Ups 2, starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, David Spade, Chris Rock and Salma Hayek, and Captain Phillips retelling the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the hijacking by Somali pirates of a US cargo ship, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.

Iron Man 3 is an American superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics, starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and Rebecca Hall. Tony Stark has become a peacekeeper, but new threats emerge regularly all around the globe, and Iron Man is the only one who can take care of them.

Other films that will be airing on HBO are Monsters University, where Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. This movie unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends. In the fantasy adventure film Oz the Great and Powerful, James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams star in this adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s classic novels.

Viewers will also enjoy The Lone Ranger, a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid, a man of the law, into a legend of justice – taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption. Olympus Has Fallen follows the former presidential guard Mike Banning who is trapped inside the White House in the wake of a terrorist attack. Using his inside knowledge, Banning works with national security to rescue the President from his kidnappers.

Also premiering in 2014 are other important titles such as Planes, After Earth, Beautiful Creatures, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, Escape from Planet Earth, Gangster Squad, Gravity, Insidious Chapter 2, Jack the Giant Slayer, Man of Steel, Pacific Rim, Side Effects, The Call, The Conjuring, The Great Gatsby, The Hangover Part III, The Smurfs 2, This is the End, We’re the Millers, White House Down, Evil Dead, and Elysium.

In Searching for Sugar Man, winner of the 2013 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, two eager fans from Cape Town go on a search for American folk musician Sixto Rodriguez, whose short career still garnered a huge fan base for him in South Africa.

In films, MAX brings you On the Road, directed by Walter Salles and based on Jack Keruoac’s novel from 1957. The film tells the story of Sal Paradise, an aspiring young writer from New York, as he travels the United States with friends in search of the world and of themselves. The Place Beyond the Pines, starring Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes and Ray Liotta, is based on the life of a motorcycle rider who begins robbing banks to provide for his newborn son. Also premiering is the romantic drama Before Midnight, sequel to Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, co-starring Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy. It picks up nine years later as the couple takes a summer vacation in Greece with their twin girls.

The French comedy The Players, starring Jean Dujardin (Oscar® winner for The Artist) and Gilles Lellouche, features a series of short films about male infidelity. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, based on the 1974 novel, takes place in London in the early 1970s during the Cold War. Veteran George Smiley is forced from retirement to uncover a Soviet double agent infiltrated in British Intelligence. Also, the romantic comedy film directed by and starring Woody Allen, To Rome with Love, tells four romantic and adventurous stories of both visitors and residents in Rome.

Kon-Tiki is a historical drama film based on Thor Heyerdahl’s 1947 expedition across the Pacific Ocean from South America to the Polynesian islands. It was the first Norwegian film to be nominated for both an Oscar and Golden Globe. The Master is an American drama film starring Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams. Freddie Quell, a World War II veteran, is struggling to readjust to society and ends up becoming enamored with a religious movement called “The Cause,” as he travels the country to help spread the word.

In addition, MAX brings you Farewell, My Queen, directed by Benoit Jacquot. It tells the fictional story of Marie Antoinette's last days in power, seen through the eyes of a young servant who reads aloud to her. In the Japanese drama film Like Someone in Love, a young prostitute develops a connection with her former university professor, who is more interested in her companionship than having relations with her. Laurence Anyways, a Canadian drama film written and directed by Xavier Dolan, captures the ten-year struggle of a woman and her transgender lover.
