Stop Our Slide? Was all really done to ensure a Non-Partisan rally concerning (possible lack of) Barbadian Governance?

In my view, there is no doubt that far better can be done to ensure Barbados is under better administration – in fact, I would go so far as to say that when the late Sir Richie Haynes created the National Democratic Party in 1989 he was at least two decades ahead of his time…

Even those who could directly benefit from the Cultural Stakeholders Bill came out to see what is different this time around...

If the NDP had persisted or began their party when voting was held in February, there is a very strong possibility if Sir Richie was still alive? We may well have had a PM older than when Ronald Reagan demitted office in 1988! Bajans are tired of the Tweedledumb versus Tweedledumber, they want not just a change – but swift remedial action, before we become worse off than Guyana and Jamaica were in the late 70’s to mid 80’s, now both are on the rise…

The concept for Stop Our Slide is a good one in essence, let people’s signatures show they want a change in the Finance Ministry, but the execution left much to be desired – why not hold signature drives during the week at popular venues like Blackrock, Warrens, Oistins and Speightstown where folk go to shop or pass the Post Office?

Dale Marshall and Tyrone Lovell at the rally noted how the gathering was more like a BLP convention rather than a showing that people want a different way for handling fiscal policy and straightening out the economy. If the Stop Our Slide was truly a Non-Partisan event, then the color (if any) should have been green for 2 reasons – blue & yellow are Barbados’ colors combined and it is desire to see the Economy grow again! Plus, were there no other speakers like David Comissiong or anybody from the DLP brave enough to join in? Don’t just ask for solidarity, show it was there for all to see!

Marshall, as always in his contribution - let the microphone do the projecting for himself rather than emphasise by screaming into what would amplify his voice, he made some intriguing suggestions based on some startling ideas (if true)...

The former Attorney General implied Police are using their own vehicles to carry out their jobs despite $10 million BBD pumped into a new fleet (I wonder, does Sir Kyffin Simpson know? He usually makes a generous donation of vehicles to the RBPF); Marshall also could not understand why so much money is poured into the David Thompson Memorial Football tournament when the same monies could be used to supply Police with Flexitime fees which could obviate Overtime?

An intriguing reverie, shared between Sir Allen Fields, ex-BWA Chair Elvin Sealy and Dr Jerome X. Walcott...

The plight of the RBPF appears near & dear to Marshall’s heart, yet we can only hope – in the absence of an effective third party – that he will recall his concerns should he get another chance to make life easier for Constables and their superiors… Marshall also claims how officers cannot get new uniforms; lack the proverbial notebooks which appear ubiquitous with police the world over; and they practice target sessions without Live Ammunition?

Tyrone Lovell as Moderator was not really in comedy mode this time around, and for me, it was a truly refreshing change – instead, we learned how a woman in Mexico gave birth outside the hospital not because her labor was too imminent but as she could not afford to pay; yet in Haiti where only 3 years ago they were smashed by an earthquake – are now in the middle of a thriving construction boom with plenty of overseas investors wishing to be part of the success. Meanwhile, here in Barbados? Huh…

Dr Jerome Walcott, while passionate in his concern for the QEH, nevertheless had up to 2007 to correct inefficiencies there... So when he bellows about shortages of Toilet Paper or Medication due to unpaid bills, should he not have addressed suggestions of pilferage while he was Minister of Health six years ago?

Clyde Mascoll then appeared, aiming for comedy by referring to Chris Sinckler‘s bungling the Budget as he seems inable to call large numbers. Mascoll claims when he was part of the DEMS, he had to write numbers in words for Sinckler to get right… It may be true, but this has no immediate bearing on the crisis to hand. Mascoll needs to stop carping from the sidelines and run for a seat, so people will forget this “political Quisling” is the only Opposition Leader in Barbados to defect!

This is not to say "Malik with Teeth," as Dame Billie Miller calls Mascoll, did not have valid points... He did indicate how Barbados has had no new roads nor buildings in the last six years!

Most people have forgotten that Kerrie Symmonds was, at one point – the General Secretary of the DEMS and made a brutal, nasty and personal attack not only on the BLP’s female MP’s but also family members of ex-Chief Justice Sir David Simmons. But now he is a good fellow as he secured a St James seat for the Bees, some folk would say Kerrie knows how to cut a seat out from under you! 😉 Apart from his usual sledging…

This time around Symmonds was claiming Donville Inniss was at a rumshop in his constituency cussing Sinckler, Kerrie also claims the Almond resort is not part of the current regime's portfolio and for them to sell what is not theirs borders on questionably legal practice...

It seems any rift between Owen Arthur and Mia Mottley is finally mended, when he took to the gazebo at Queen’s Park he gave his seal of approval on seeking the No Confidence measure, and added it is a better motion than what he sought to do in 1994.

However, Mr Arthur's references are still a bit high for the audience... He wold compare Freundel Stuart with a James Joyce reference or describe his manner of running Cabinet similar to what was mentioned in Voltaire's "Candide." For me personally, I treasured them as I read most of what he spoke to, but how many Bajans will do this? That is why Mia quotes Buju Banton or Li'l Rick when she addresses a crowd because everyone will get it, be they University, College or Standpipe trained!

In fact, Ms Mottley’s similes and aphorisms were chilling and graphic that anyone can grasp – she told the meagre crowd how Sinckler’s Bugdget was like 2 Panadol for a Triple Bypass.

She also admonished if Barbados does not access $500 million by March 2014 that the country is like a negligent diabetic cut at the knee and facing sepsis of the hip!

This meeting was rushed, it should have had more people and better ways for seeking more signatures should have been executed. If they want a Barbadian doing an appropriate song, then why not use Rihanna and her “I Love The Way You Lie,” since the country like the tune is facing domestic violence the way it’s handled right now!
