Honey Jam Artists Learn about Publishing and Songwriting at Santosha Workshop

Honey Jam Barbados put on a songwriting workshop for the 2013 lineup of artists. The session started off with Vivian Barclay, GM of Warner Chappell Music Publishing Canada giving an introduction to publishing and stressing the importance of registering with a Performing Rights Society, breaking down the most lucrative avenues for songwriters to earn income and the importance of having your music played outside of Barbados in order to attract a publisher.

The next event is the "Getting Your Music Off the Rock" taking place on November 22nd right before the Honey Jam concerts on November 23rd & 24th.

All of the panellists also spoke about making sure when you write songs with others that the splits of how the profits will be divided are agreed upon and the need for there to be a mandatory percentage of local music being played on radio.

The second part of the day focussed on the craft of songwriting. JJ Poulter and Brian Marshall of Kite, iNDRANi and Simon Pipe all shared with the artists their personal songwriting process, the stories behind some of their hits, the experience of co-writing and writing for other artists.

It was a great day of learning and sharing. In the words of artist Tyra Trotman:

“This was truly an amazing experience , I gained so much knowledge and information today about something very important that will change the way I operate in respect to the business side of my song writing, I also felt very inspired meeting such amazing artists and really took everything they said to heart. I’m still reeling in the high of today’s experience, so much knowledge passed on from individuals truly great at what they do.”
