In the event of an approaching weather system, it is advisable that persons take all the necessary precautions.
Windows and doors should be secured against high winds and important documents placed in a sealed container.
All chemicals, livestock feed and essential supplies should be stored above ground and away from flood waters.
In an emergency it is essential to have adequate quantities of water for drinking, washing and other domestic chores to last for three weeks, along with non-perishable foods.
In terms of general preparedness, persons should have adequate matches, candles, batteries, a torchlight and a change of clothing in case evacuation is warranted.
Members of the public are advised to have a portable transistor radio with spare batteries on hand and to keep listening to the radio for updates. (CL/BGIS)
