Looking at dead-tree print, so many times I see about an opening for either Experienced or Entry-Level yet require a Master’s or Bachelor’s … If, not just Barbados, but everyone all over this planet, are truly looking to jump feet-first, and devil take the hindmost, into the 21st Century? Then I feel it’s time we need to have new qualifications for openings other than Degrees, there are so many folks I know who have a Master’s and seem to specialise in making a Zombie have a PhD; while some of the “dumbest” people in an Office should really be running it… Jobs, Branson, Edison & Kiyosaki all never finished School, yet created Empires.

On the other hand because someone lacks experience does not mean they cannot perform. They may try harder since they do NOT know the protocols etc. Yet too many companies want to hire an inexperienced person because they figure they can pay them below Minimum wages, hoping they stay as they have no other option – they are only there ’til they gather enough experience for the next rung up the ladder! Once they have siphoned off what they feel is useful from you? They are out faster than you can say “sweatshop overseer“!

Ser richard Branson's latest book? "SCREW Business As Usual," where he says Corporate Responsibility must be as automatic as breathing among other suggestions. If Ser Richard has 1 "O" Level he has a lot, his first venture was a record label which eventually included Janet Jackson, Soul II Soul and other hit-makers.

In this particular case, by hiring an older person you may be better off – they are too old for an Entry post yet experienced enough to train a Newbie; yet they don’t want to upset the gravy train since they really need those funds. That comes back to why I say degrees are utter crud, lemme see what you did and are doing – give you 6 months to fall or fly! You might be pleasantly surprised…

If you’re afraid the person (new or old) can take your job away? Up YOUR game, if you keep hiring idiots then it is not cost-effective in the long run, since you have to keep Advertising, Retraining (loss of Productivity while showing ropes) and this can be prevented by looking at the right person for the right situation, not a series of hoops they leapt though at school and now forgotten as an adult…
