BARBADIAN I.T. PROFESSIONALS PREPARE THEMSELVES AGAINST HACKERS VIA CENTRAL BANK BOOST

Local information technology professionals will on June 5 gain firsthand knowledge on how to better protect their systems from hackers.

The Central Bank of Barbados (CBB) and the Barbados Chapter of the Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) are hosting a one-day exhibition and workshop on protection technologies.

“It’s important that IT professionals stay ahead of the hackers to the extent possible, and this can be best achieved through education, information and exposure to the new protection systems, hence this exhibition,” the organisers said.

The Bank and ISSA have therefore attracted the top local and international suppliers of IT protection systems to participate in the event at the Barbados Hilton.

The exhibitors include:

Above Security
• Aruba Networks
• Check Point Software Technologies
• FireEye
• ForeScout
• Fujitsu
• Gigamon
• IBM
• McAfee
• Microsoft/Inova Solutions
• Symantec/Infolock; and
• TSL

This exhibition runs parallel to a conference for IT professionals from the region's central banks and will allow participants to network with international suppliers of technologies, learn about the latest in layered protection systems, exchange ideas, and discuss ways to better safeguard their IT systems from hackers.

Management Information Systems Department Director at the CBB, Janice Marshall, explained that the US-based vendors were initially invited to participate in the regional central bankers’ conference. However, in light of the recent attacks against Twitter, Google and other big international companies, as well as local offices, the Bank felt it necessary to share the vendors’ expertise with as many local IT professionals as possible.

The exhibition is open to all local IT professionals or persons with an interest in information technology security systems.
