An essential ingredient in encouraging children’s love of reading has been added to a primary school in St. Peter through the restoration of the school’s library with support from the Speightstown branch of CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank.

The branch recently assisted the Roland Edwards Primary School as part of its Adopt-A-Cause by working with the principal to determine the types of books needed, purchasing and presenting some 80 books, restocking the library, as well as encouraging students to read more.  The books range from geographical, historical, adventure and mystery in topic.

Branch Manager, Cheryl Stoute said the branch was happy to be part of such a worthy project. “Staff were instrumental in the restoration of the library and are heartened to be part of an initiative designed to encourage young people to read more. The potential impact on students and the wider community is vast.”

The branch plans to continue building ties with the school. Previously staff had assisted Roland Edwards Primary with its graduation where it also donated books as part of prizes.

Funded by the bank’s Comtrust Foundation, the Adopt-A-Cause programme allows departments of the Bank to volunteer their time, resources and skills to worthy causes. These include repairs and refurbishments to schools and retirement homes; donations to the HIV/AIDS food bank; contributions to regional feeding programmes; purchasing and packing school supplies; and supporting breakfast programmes for school children.
