American Student Body appeals for full accountability & honesty: Guyanese student holds Executive to task for Irregularities
Mark Richardson, Vice President of the Medgar Evers College Student Government Association, is calling for his colleagues and the school’s administration to change the SGA’s constitution thus ensuring that there is more accountability and supervision for the spending of monies. Richardson issued this passionate appeal after a proposed impeachment hearing against embattled Treasurer Camille McIntosh was eventually withdrawn.
He said that there is an urgent need for a full investigation into the finances of SGA noting that there are several unanswered questions and procedures which needs urgent attention; “There are several questionable actions and therefore as an officer of this body I am appealing for the school’s administration to look into the affairs of this body immediately and urgently.”
A full blown inquiry into the SGA finances noting that no longer discrepancies, unaccountability and blatant corruption by persons can continue to be tolerated. Richardson who is being touted to win the Student President election should he run for office stressed that it’s important for persons seeking public or higher offices to recognise that they have a responsibility to demonstrate positive leadership qualities adding that too many persons are seeking public offices for personal and selfish reasons. This can be viewed as an oblique reference to McIntosh who indicated she intends to be a Congresswoman declaring her life will be engaged in politics.
Impeachment proceedings had begun against McIntosh after Richardson had brought several counts of evidence to the SGA which had clearly demonstrated that several financial irregularities and questionable decisions existed within the SGA’s Treasury. However in two sittings by the executive of the SGA, a unanimous decision was made to impeach her. The decision to proceed with the impeachment hearing reportedly had the blessings of the entire SGA after several members questioned McIntosh’s conduct and operation citing too many irregularities were allowed during her term. However, had the proceedings been completed McIntosh would have had the unfortunate and infamous accolade of being the first sitting executive member within the Medgar Evers College SGA to be impeached.
However, it was pointed out that after careful consideration the process was aborted with the SGA Vice President along with school officials calling for a complete overhauling of the constitution thus ensuring that serious penalties including criminal proceedings can be taken against persons found guilty.
Richardson who intends someday to be a businessman, armed with his Computer Science qualifications, said that a full forensic investigation is important. Several students have demanded McIntosh step down as certainly she’s lost credibility in continuing to serve them. They have even challenged the SGA to force her to step down. But Mc Intosh has not budged.
The impeached hearing was sparked after revelations that a number of monies were outstanding by McIntosh after she was entrusted with executing some projects also many students had reported that they had turned over monies to her. According to Richardson there’s enough evidence to impeach McIntosh however the SGA forego this, stressing there were other more important things that needed their attention and action would have taken up time that they didn’t had.
“In my opinion there were enough evidence to take it through but we had so much of unfinished work that we sought to focus on more pressing matters rather than to be distracted by Camille McIntosh. There’s enough evidence to remove Ms McIntosh from the SGA.”
According to the SGA Vice President, the evidence that his executives had were enough to justify their decision noting that it is imperative that students understand that accountability, honesty and respect are critically important in successfully running the SGA.
