“Wait, you did hear?” return of Original Devil’s Advocate rant: Print Media, Unions and General Elections just passed

In this my first article after being hounded by Ian Bourne for many months to do so, I would like to touch on a few things in Barbadian society which concern me. Some of you may agree with my thoughts and some of you might think I am a total and complete idiot... but that’s the joy of free speech, I guess.

My first topic is the Nation newspaper. You are the leading newspaper on this lil rock we call home. You have the most sales and subsequently make the most revenue from advertising. Therefore one would think that you do not have to become the bajan equivalent of the Inquirer to sell papers. Every damn time I take up a Nation (which is getting lighter and lighter daily) it’s filled with needless graphic photos of some accident or mindless gossip.

(PERSONAL FILE IMAGE) Have you so called journalists nothing of substance to report on? I don’t need to know about the state of the economy or social programs, fill me with necessary knowledge like what's in “Pudding & Souse” and show me a pic of a dead biker while his mother cries; stuuuupse. Your credibility is sinking faster that this economy - do something about it!!

Next, Sir Roy Trotman was in said gossip rag the other day lamenting on the lack of young people joining the unions. Seriously, Sir Roy??? Truly??? Why should they? Trade Unions in Barbados now serve as much purpose as a white crayon. The times have changed and the unions have sadly not changed with them. What they do now is attempt to support the sh*te some workers do on a daily basis. Then Sir Roy and his cohorts jump in to prove that they “still have it” whilst justifying their large salaries and Sir Roy’s BMW. When last has Sir Roy really stood up to someone and won? Remember the Sandy Lane incident? Royal Shop? (s)Lime? All enormous wastes of time and energy. Yet no one is saying anything about this sh*te. Both employers and employees need to improve their work ethic so that we can move forward as a nation in these rough economic times and the Trade Unions are in no way aiding in that regard.

{PERSONAL FILE CARTOON} Lastly, Haynesley Benn, who had about as much of a chance winning the St. Peter seat as I have of winning the next Caribbean Lotto. Haynesly knew full well he was going to lose but assumed that as the sacrificial lamb, he would again get a ministerial pick. That did not come to pass and suddenly Haynesley has a revelation that he didn't win because the DLP was inactive in St. Peter hence ending his chances. Good Christ Haynesley, you never had a snowball’s chance in hell of winning that seat. (CLICK FOR BIGGER)

Now you’re running around like the little boy that just got out and took up his bat and ball and went home, and committing political suicide in the process. Does this man have no advisors or friends that could have shut him up? It is for reasons like this that the political scene in this country is in the sad condition which it is today.
