getWrite! and Ev-O!-lution have joined forces to extend a call for submissions for Senseisha: Memoirs of a Caribbean Woman. Senseisha is an anthology of creative, non-fiction stories that are distinctly Caribbean and empower women to embrace and take control of their sensuality.

The anthology invites stories under five categories that embrace first time experiences, coming out stories, love and intimacy, overcoming abuse and embracing the taboo.

Juliette Maughan, Founder of Ev-O!-lution, laments that, “We have a double standard in the Caribbean around the perception of male versus female sexuality; it is as if we women are meant to be the gatekeepers of sexual morality. As a result, we do not consistently demonstrate autonomy over our bodies. As mothers, sisters and friends, this translates to a deficit of frank, open and non-judgmental discussions around what it means to be a sensual woman and how to have a healthy attitude towards sexuality.”

Shakirah Bourne, Founder of getWrite! agrees, stating that the literature on female Caribbean sexuality seems to have been pigeon-holed into certain categories. “You can find literature which explores female prostitution, sexual violence, women using their bodies for financial security and advancement in careers, but they aren’t enough stories about positive female sensuality, discussing finding sexual pleasure, self-love or finding sexual fulfillment after abuse. These topics are whispered behind closed doors, and are seen as taboo in general Caribbean society.

As we celebrate the International Day of Women, Senseisha forms part of an emerging female sensual, and sexual, evolutionary movement that recognizes women’s sexuality and sexual and reproductive rights.
