(Kittitians are) being inundated with conflicting press releases issued by two different groups claiming to speak for the constituents of the West Basseterre Labour Branch.

On Tuesday, (Feb 5) a press release was disseminated by some faction of the West Basseterre Branch calling for Sam Condor’s resignation as a Labour Party member and also as the parliamentary representative for Constituency #3.

“The Branch is demanding therefore that he immediately resign from the party which he no longer associates himself and also resign as the elected representative of Constituency #3 as he no longer represents the views and opinions of the vast majority of constituents that gave him the legitimate mandate to serve,” the group said.

It went on to say that the Branch had taken a decision to replace Hon. Condor as the Labour Party candidate to contest the next general elections and indicated a search was already underway to find that new candidate. Condor went on the defensive Tuesday afternoon and said “nothing in that letter made sense”. He said it was possible the group calling for him to resign his seat in parliament did not understand the ramifications of such action.

“To resign from Cabinet is one thing but to resign as a parliamentary representative is another thing. It would mean there would have to be a bi-election to fill the vacancy and also there is the matter of the Vote of No Confidence. Should we have a bi-election or Vote of No Confidence,” the parliamentarian questioned.
