Alexandra Secondary Crisis handled – Barbadians remain outraged, what next? Gladiator games?
A MAN and his son were once going with their Donkey to market. As they were walking along by its side a countryman passed them and said: “You fools, what is a Donkey for but to ride upon?”
So the Man put the Boy on the Donkey and they went on their way. But soon they passed a group of men, one of whom said: “See that lazy youngster, he lets his father walk while he rides.”
So the Man ordered his Boy to get off, and got on himself. But they hadn’t gone far when they passed two women, one of whom said to the other: “Shame on that lazy lout to let his poor little son trudge along.”
Well, the Man didn’t know what to do, but at last he took his Boy up before him on the Donkey. By this time they had come to the town, and the passers-by began to jeer and point at them. The Man stopped and asked what they were scoffing at. The men said: “Aren’t you ashamed of yourself for overloading that poor Donkey of yours—you and your hulking son?”
The Man and Boy got off and tried to think what to do. They thought and they thought, till at last they cut down a pole, tied the Donkey’s feet to it, and raised the pole and the Donkey to their shoulders. They went along amid the laughter of all who met them till they came to Market Bridge, when the Donkey, getting one of his feet loose, kicked out and caused the Boy to drop his end of the pole. In the struggle the Donkey fell over the bridge, and his fore-feet being tied together he was drowned.
“That will teach you,” said an old man who had followed them:
“PLEASE ALL, AND YOU WILL PLEASE NONE.”
When you hear of Yale, Berkeley, Princeton, Harvard, Gordonstoun and Oxford one knows these are recognised COLLEGES, where much fuss as well as (too much?) Pomp & La Di Dah is made… Yet the hyperbole is perhaps justly so? Depends on which graduate you cite…
Now compare the names of Alexandra (AX), Cawmere, Queen’s, Lodge & Kolij… All of these are SECONDARY institutes – not even the usual completion of one’s learning, since true learning continues not even at Tertiary level but OUTSIDE when in the world of work!
So why are Bajans foaming at the mouth over the separation of Alexandra’s teaching staff? There some who decry their alma mater is being “sullied” with this and that educator (depending on which side of AX you rooted for) and people waited for the five (6?) step plan to reach fruition…
You all wanted action, so here it is! This is NOT spreading a virus as some would purport – this is culling and exiling warring factions in a mess that can only get uglier if left alone, here it is; a final solution is looming and still people who no longer attend any of these facilities are crying, anyone gave thought to the poor pupils of AX from Jan 2012 to now?
Will you hire them when they’re ready to look for a job and they have 3 CXC’s instead of 6 or 8 because of this fiasco where educators were infants with tantrums while children sought to secure their future as if they were the adults instead?
As much as I have ragged both the inquiry and this regime which
wasted used $600,000.00 and then the Public Service Commission could not use those findings, still & all a decision has been made – rather like (appropriately enough) Alexander the Great with the Gordian Knot…
Find the problem, face the challenge and choose a remedy quickly, then implement it right away! But Bajans are STILL upset? Perhaps if there were some gladiator games where Broomes and the teachers can have a go?
