“Variety” Charity raises $1.1 million over 5 years – New Crew selected for 2013
Bds $1.1 million… that’s the net amount, after all expenses, that Variety – the Children’s Charity has raised over the past five years; even more impressive is the fact that this exact amount has been spent on funding the good causes they support, over the same period.
This was one of the key points made at the Variety 16th Annual General Meeting which was just held at the Plantation Garden Theatre.
Donnah Russell, Executive Director explained, “Sometimes it’s good to stop and measure what we do in dollar and cents. You can really see the difference we are making!”
Two major fundraisers in the past year were the Gold Hearts Appeal which raised over Bds $118,000 and the Row for Charity event which raised over Bds $38,000.
Chief Barker (President) Mandy McKay reported on Variety’s activities: transporting physically challenged children; Summer Movie Mornings and the Gold Hearts party for over 300 children; as well as continuing the late Auntie Olga’s legacy of the ‘Back to School’ programme which provides uniforms, shoes and supplies for over 180 children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
At the meeting, ‘Chief Barker’ Mandy McKay ended her two-year tenure and was thanked for her contribution. Colin Brewer was appointed Chief Barker and Glenda Medford as Assistant Chief Barker.
“This year we want to focus on increasing our membership and volunteer base,” Brewer explained. “Currently, we have a dedicated core of people, but I believe that others do want to get involved more, so we need to make it easy for them.”
Ms. Russell noted on behalf of the Charity: “… we’d like to thank the general public, our members and sponsors, as without them our work would not be possible. Believe us… your dollar makes a big difference. Thank you!”
