Digicel (Barbados) Limited recently showed its concern for the health of its staff in addition to continuing its support for the fight against breast cancer by facilitating free breast screening for all of its employees.

Last week management solicited the services of the Barbados Cancer Society and its Breast Screening Programme’s Mobile Breast Clinic, which visited the head office of the telecommunications company, located in Hastings, Christ Church. This provided an opportunity for all staff, both male and female, to be screened for signs of the deadly disease, in addition to receiving instructions on how to perform their own regular checks at home.

The company also took the opportunity to present the Breast Screening Programme with a monetary donation from the staff, which was collected in the first week of the October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month – during the company’s pink ribbon drive.

Digicel staff took advantage of the opportunity to be screened by nurses from the Breast Screening Programme’s Mobile Breast Clinic.

Head of Human Resources for Digicel (Barbados) Limited, Kerrigan Roach, said the impetus for the free screening was provided by the enthusiasm of the staff:

“Credit must be given to the employees themselves as they were the ones who started the drive to donate to the Breast Screening Programme, while showing their recognition of the global fight against breast cancer by wearing pink on World Breast Cancer Awareness Day. With so much emphasis being placed today on early detection, management saw it as a good idea to encourage regular check-ups, while also making an added contribution to the programme’s fund, through paying for the service.”
