The Central Bank of Barbados announced late on Friday night that Barbadians donated an estimated 1,652,000 cents to its national collection effort.

The Bank, Alzheimer’s Association and all three rotary clubs on the island coordinated the initiative to get persons to take their one cents to work, or to Heroes’ Square in the City, in celebration of World Alzheimer’s Day on Friday 21 September.

Public Affairs Officer at the Bank, Novaline Brewster described the initiative, which is one aspect of a 6-month effort to raise five million cents as “simply overwhelming and a demonstration that Barbadians are a very caring people.”

“I would wish, on behalf of the Bank, the Alzheimer’s Association and Rotary clubs to thank everyone who donated their cents . The response surpassed our expectations and we are eternally grateful,” Brewster stated.

Brewster reiterated that the campaign ends on December 31 and she encouraged Barbadians to continue to deposit their one cents in the yellow bins located in supermarkets, gas stations, credit unions, media houses, telecommunications companies, insurance companies, small shops, stores, law firms, churches and government offices.

The coins will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association to assist with the construction of a day care centre for sufferers of Alzheimer’s.
