This year’s conference marks the 20th anniversary of the 1992 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), in Rio de Janeiro, and the 10th anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg.

The Conference will focus on two themes: (a) a green economy in the context of sustainable development poverty eradication; and (b) the institutional framework for sustainable development. The conference will also focus on seven themes, which are in need of urgent national, regional and international attention: decent jobs, energy, sustainable cities, food security and sustainable agriculture, water, oceans and disaster preparedness.

The official discussions get underway today, and conclude on the 22nd of June, 2012. It is anticipated that the ensuing discussion will lead to a clear framework focusing on practical measures for implementing sustainable development. Over the last few months, member states have spent time negotiation the Zero Draft Outcome Document, it is anticipated that this document will form the basis of agreement going forward, for the 190 member states gathered in Rio de Janeiro.

In parallel to the conference, will be many side events, exhibitions, and presentations by a wide range of partners. Of note for the Caribbean, will be the participation of The Honourable Freundel Stuart, Q.C., M.P, Barbados’ Prime Minister, as a global leader and a member of the High Level Group on Sustainable Energy for All, in a High Level Event on the Sustainable Energy for All, which take places on, Thursday, 21 June 2012 in the margins of the conference.
