NEW MYSTERY CANINE VIRUS OUTBREAK KILLING DOGS IN GUYANA’S NORTH RUPUNUNI #DOGS #VIRUS #RSPCA #CANINE #GUYANA #CARICOM #DANGER

Rupununi

Dear reader,

In March 2012 a mysterious and deadly canine virus surfaced in Guyana’s North Rupununi region whilst I was there on vacation, so far over 100 dogs have died in one effected Amerindian village alone (one can only guess how many dogs have died in all the infected villages combined) – and yet I have been told by the local Makushi Amerindians whom I vacationed with for 3 weeks – that no-one from the relevant authorities (Ministry of Agriculture & Veterinary Services) in Guyana has showed up in the effected communities (as of 30th March 2012 when I personally left the affected area) to take samples or conduct tests – in order to solve this mystery illness.

It is speculated by local peoples in effected communities that their regional authorities may not have even bothered to report the matter to the central government for fear of jeopardizing the commercial interests of the region’s vital agriculture sector. This may or may not be so, but regardless of financial considerations – the human health considerations must be paramount in any emerging deadly virus scenario in the times we live in, H1N1 effected animals only at first also – but it mutated and crossed into human hosts with deadly consequences – as we are all aware.

The symptoms begin with the infected canines oozing mucous from their noses, then it progresses to trembling, wheezing and ‘coughing‘ with the dogs becoming increasingly weak; then in the final stage (a one-week course) the infected dog dies.

IF this is a known and non-threatening (to humans) canine virus – the infected communities who have never seen anything like it before – would like to know what it is, and if this is some new affliction unknown to Veterinary Science – it is a matter of utmost urgency that the best minds in and out of the region – come together to seek a diagnosis and a cure.

As you can see in the disturbing footage that I filmed myself – the infected dogs are drinking from the SAME water trough as ducks, chickens and one can only guess what else – that human beings have daily close contact with AND will likely consume. The dog featured died on 30th March 2012.

It does not take a qualified virologist to see the obvious ‘potential‘ risk of the seeds of a pandemic beginning right in our midst here in the Caribbean, and in the best interest of humanity – I call upon the authorities of Guyana to immediately investigate this phenomenon and spare no expense in finding a cure for the same!

"IF this is a known and non-threatening (to humans) canine virus – the infected communities who have never seen anything like it before – would like to know what it is, and if this is some new mutated version of the Canine influenza that first surfaced in 2004 (which has a much lower mortality rate) or distemper – it is a matter of utmost urgency that the best minds in our Hemisphere – come together to seek a diagnosis and a cure."

Some may no doubt launch vitriolic attacks on me personally (saying I am merelycrying wolf and what-not) for bringing this matter to light, but I am not running in any popularity contest; and I honestly believe that it is better that we ALL pay attention to this issue for the sake of everyone – rather than hide it under the rug and hope it proves to be of no serious consequence to the nation, region, or world. In these dark times that we live in, can we really afford to be complacent wishful thinkers when the theoretical possibilities are endless and dire?

I have the utmost confidence that His Excellency President Donald Ramoutar of Guyana will see that qualified persons are dispatched immediately to investigate this matter thoroughly.

Yours sincerely,

Damon Gerard Corrie
