The Lodge School Old Scholars Association in Barbados is partnering with the world leader in digital communications software; Toon Boom Animation Inc. to introduce training in animation within the school’s curricular.

This initiative complements Toon Boom’s mission in the region to stimulate the development of the Caribbean as the next animation hub.

A memorandum of understanding giving effect to the new programme was recently signed by Toon Boom’s CEO Joan Vogelsang and Old Scholars President, Byron Gibson. This initiative will lead to the introduction of an animation programme at the Lodge School and will involve the training of trainers and students in this new area.

Mrs. Vogelesang who was in Barbados to attend the Barbados Technology Exhibition (BTECH) and to launch two new animation studios praised the Lodge School for pioneering the programme and has pledged her continued support.

Education is one of the main business areas of Toon Boom and we are very pleased to see the use of our software has resulted in students who previously struggled, becoming more engaged in classes and seeing improved grades. In several school districts, boys showed no interest in the core curriculum before the use of our technology and did not want to miss school after it was implemented. We also noticed that for children that are more visual than verbal, animation enables them to demonstrate they actually understand the subject matter”, shared Mrs. Vogelesang, president and chief executive officer at Toon Boom.

Lodge School Old Scholars President, Byron Gibson said as part of their Future Excellence initiative, “we are excited about the many opportunities that partnering with Toon Boom create for the students at The Lodge School”.

The Lodge School Old Scholars Association Inc. and Toon Boom share a common vision for the potential positive impact of animation across all areas of education, and we are proud to be the first school in The Caribbean to pilot such a programme“, he added.

The Toon Boom team has been extremely supportive in helping us to develop this initiative and we look forward to working closely with them as we continue its development”, he concluded.

Toon Boom has been deepening partnerships with Governments though the Ministries of Education, various educational institutions including the University of the West Indies in Barbados, University of Trinidad and Tobago in Trinidad and the University of Technology in Jamaica.

Regional Consultant, Phil Philips welcomed the Lodge School initiative and announced continued plans to strengthen efforts to introduce animation in education through a summer programme.
