The Digicel Cricket Experience events continued in St. Lucia this past week as the Digicel Series 2012 swept through the island. The Experience events are happening throughout the Digicel Series venues to enhance the WICB Digicel Grassroots cricket development programme.
Held at the Corinth Playing Field, the coaching clinic for the more than 30 St. Lucian youngsters featured six West Indies players. Captain Darren Sammy was joined by teammates Dwayne & Darren Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine and Garey Mathurin, who all provided cricket coaching and advice to the kids ranging in age from six to 18. The players were also joined by West Indies legend, Lance Gibbs, who imparted his renowned skills as well.
After the coaching was finished and the skills were passed on, the kids were treated to photos with the West Indies players that were printed and framed right away and then signed by the West Indies players.
“This is our second Digicel Cricket Experience so far and we are so pleased it was another success. This is such an integral part of our overall Digicel Series sponsorship,” Karl Donnelly, Digicel Group Head of Sponsorship explained.
“Wouldn’t it be wonderful if one day a West Indies cricketer says that having a player come and coach him at one of these events was the impetus that inspired him to work harder to make it on the team?”, continued Donnelly.
Head Coach for the St. Lucia Castries Cluster Grassroots programme, Tyrone Harris, was very pleased to have the West Indies players with them for the day. “This will have a very positive effect on their attitudes. The West Indies guys have shown them what it is like to play at the highest level and these kids really look up to them. Being face to face with these guys and exchanging techniques is really priceless!”
One of the young boys, 12 year-old, Malick Lyon agrees and said; “It was good and really makes me want to do better – it makes me want to be play cricket for the West Indies one day!”
