Mount Gay Rum is reliving the early days of marine trade and promoting the development of emission free shipping via a recent connection with the Netherlands based, Merchant Sailing Company’s “Fair Transport” programme.

Recently, Mount Gay Rum presented the crew members of the vessel “Tres Hombres”, with 6 cases of Mount Gay Eclipse Rum after the traditional sailing schooner visited Barbados as part of its voyage, in addition to participating in the second annual Mount Gay Rum Round Barbados Race, held on January 21, 2012.

A 32 meter brigantine, “Tres Hombres” is pioneering the “new era” of sailing cargo transport by leading a new fleet of innovative Ecoliners promoting the use of sustainable and eco-friendly marine transport.

Under the “Fair Transport” programme the Merchant Sailing Company uses innovations in merchant shipping to allow for emission free transportation from point A to point B, with modern communication allowing for the optimal use of weather systems and combating the impact of fluctuating oil prices and environmental restrictions on the running costs of motor vessels, given the fact that the wind used to propel sailing vessels is free of cost.

Apart from acknowledging the benefits of sailing cargo transport, Mount Gay Rum recognizes the historical value of the traditional sailing vessel, many of which would have been utilized to transport Mount Gay Rum around the world in its early days of production and export.

Peter Samuel, International Brand Manager for Mount Gay Rum said they wanted to recreate the journey of Mount Gay Rum’s many years of travel across the seas in this type of vessel, in addition to reemphasizing the strong relationship forged between the brand and the sailing industry:

Being the world’s oldest and most recognizable rum brand, Mount Gay Rum would have been transported in these types of vessels during its early days of export throughout the region and around the world. Along the journey being made byTres Hombres stops will be made in the United States and the United Kingdom, both of which are markets where Mount Gay Rum is found. Therefore, we jumped at the opportunity to relive this journey by using this vessel to deliver three cases each to the U.S. and U.K. respectively.”

Mount Gay Rum has developed a very close relationship with the sailing industry since the brand’s earliest recorded existence in 1703, both from the perspective of marine trading as well as the sport of sailing. Through its continued sponsorship of regattas and sailing races around the world, Mount Gay Rum remains committed to supporting the industry and its continued development.
