Montserrat is about to host its second high-level visit of UK officials this year. Minister of State Alan Duncan is expected on island Wednesday for briefings on the island and the potential for economic development and self-sustainability.

Duncan will be accompanied by Ian McKendry, DFID Deputy Director for Caribbean & Overseas Territories; Jonny Baxter, Private Secretary to the Minister and Joy Hutcheon, Director General.

The Minister of State is to travel to Montserrat by Ferry on Wednesday evening along with Premier, the Honourable Reuben T. Meade and Access Coordinator Vincent Hippolyte. During the ride, they are to discuss a proposed access strategy for the island.

On Thursday, the minister is to visit a site earmarked for geothermal exploration, receive an island tour via helicopter and also get a first-hand look at Little Bay and Carrs Bay to assess the proposed two options coming out of the October Charrette on the development of a new town and port.

McKendry first visited the island in October to assess the progress on a new growth strategy which the Government of Montserrat was asked to develop following the six-month mid-term budget review with DFID officials. Minister Duncan’s trip follows the February visit of Secretary of State Andrew Mitchell who encouraged Montserrat to work towards greater self reliance reinforced by financial and technical support from the UK.
