Geriatric Hospital of Barbados gets generous seasonal gift
THE GERIATRIC HOSPITAL on Beckles Road has the capacity to care for 340 patients and according to Hospital Manager Joanelle Oxley-Worrell it operates at 98% to 100% of this all year round. Therefore the recent gift of 100 sheets and pillowcases will help ‘significantly’ because the facility provides quality care to its patients and the bedding is changed daily.
The idea for the donation came from the staff of Longview Associates Limited who wanted to make a difference in a tangible way. First they chose to recycle this year and to donate the $345 raised from that effort to a worthwhile cause. In addition they got the company’s charitable foundation to make a significant contribution of $12,000 which allowed for the more substantial donation of sheets as well as to have ten bath chairs manufactured, which will also be donated to the Beckles Road facility.
Oxley-Worrell indicated that she is very grateful for the generosity shown in December and would like to encourage companies and individuals to make their contributions throughout the year. She suggested the adoption of two of the hospital’s eighteen wards at a time.
The Longview staff who were represented by Michelle Brathwaite and Rachel Harewood said that the decision to make the donation was based on the realisation that people tend to focus on children at Christmas and sometimes, older persons are forgotten.
President of Longview Associates Limited, Sherene Blackett, was pleased to augment the funds needed through the company’s charitable foundation, pointing out that the initiative was staff driven.
