Barbados’ national hero Sir Garfield Sobers brought cricket to unusual territory last Friday – the U.S. Embassy.
FOSNA, the Embassy’s staff association run for and by local employees, hosted the cricketing legend for a lunchtime lecture as part of celebrations ahead of Barbados’ 45th anniversary of Independence on November 30.
Both American and Barbadian staff thoroughly enjoyed the hour-long session as Sir Garfield took them through his entire career and shared his views on the several current issues in West Indies and world cricket.
Staff members were spell-bound as Sir Garfield told the story of entering the dressing room as a 17-year old selected for his first test against England in Jamaica in 1954 and viewing greats such as Sir Frank Worrell and Sir Everton Weekes.
“I thought, am I dreaming? I’ve really made it!” he recalled.
He also shared engaging stories about his most satisfying test match in 1966 with cousin David Holford against England, his opinion that big brother Gerald Sobers was even more talented than he, and his renowned love for the game of golf.
