TeleBarbados Shows Continued Support For Telecommunications Regulation
TeleBarbados, the preferred telecommunications service provider in Barbados for premium internet, voice, and data services, continues to show its support for comprehensive telecommunications regulation in Barbados and the region with its involvement in this week’s OOCUR (Organization of Caribbean Utility Regulators) Conference, being hosted by the Barbados Fair Trading Commission (FTC).
Being held at the Accra Beach Hotel & Resort from November 2 – 4, 2011, the annual conference, which is in its ninth year, brings together utility regulators from across the region, who, since the organisation was established in 2002, have remained focused on the improvement of utility regulation and to fostering transparent and stable utility regulation through autonomous and independent regulators in member countries.
A non-profit organisation, OOCUR engages in research, training and development to facilitate understanding of regulation issues and sharing of information and experience across its members.
This year TeleBarbados has endeavoured to sponsor the welcome reception of the conference, being held from 5 p.m. on Wednesday November 2, 2011 at the Accra Beach Hotel & Resort.
Patrick Hinkson, Executive Vice President of TeleBarbados, said effective regulation is key for the development of a telecommunications platform that allows for fair competition amongst providers along with protecting the interest of consumers:
“Without adequate and effective regulation the telecommunications industry would be susceptible to monopolistic practices, thus thwarting the development of competition and removing the consumer’s right to choice. We at TeleBarbados therefore believe it is our duty to support the continued development of a comprehensive regulatory framework in order to foster continued growth of the industry through the advent of competition, which in known to drive creativity and innovation, in addition to protecting the very customers we serve.”
During the afternoon session on Thursday 3 November 2011, TeleBarbados will once again feature prominently at the conference when Mr. Hinkson makes a presentation on the topic “The Implications of Broadband Communication Trends for Competition and Regulation in an Increasingly Converging Environment”.
