Prime Minister Stuart Does Barbados Proud at the United Nations – Social Commentary by Henderson N. Bovell

Henderson Bovell is a former Chairman of the NAB, his wide repertoire of Barbadian matters allows him to be one of the island's better known commentators

Prime Minister, The Hon. Freundel J. Stuart, Q.C., M.P., delivered (what can be regarded as) a dynamic address at the United Nations (UN) which was punctuated with the ‘trademark clarity, vision and confidence‘ Barbadians associated with giants of the past, like: Prime Minister Tom Adams and Errol Barrow.

Even if Prime Minister Stuart was not the author, the speech was master-fully and purposefully delivered and with share diplomacy and confidence. While such is not usually the protocol – I feel that the person responsible should be identified for national recognition.

"Freundel J. Stuart delivered (what can be regarded as) a dynamic address at the United Nations (UN)..."

In many ways though, our professional Foreign Service Officers (FSO’s) remind me of the United States Secret Service – for this reason: Members of the Secret Service will never be rich or famous because of their job but when they do their job well, you know – the world knows and the President and his family are happy. That is the same level of pride I feel as a Barbadian – having heard Mr. Stuart’s recent address to the UN.

I say with all sincerity – that if Government should now use that same level of care, compassion and diplomacy, as regards Barbados’ immigration policy towards the region, as well as in relation to our domestic policy on immigration, which affects those from the region who live in Barbados {access to health care and so on} it will not be long before the word goes-forth (perhaps reaching the same United Nations) that Barbados is a “just and well-ordered society,” uncompromising in its respect for human rights and as regards the ‘fair and humane treatment of all.’
