HBO Latin America announced the September 1st premiere of acclaimed mini-series Carlos in the Caribbean. Based on true events, this Golden Globe® award-winning story centers around the most-wanted terrorist and assassin of the 1970’s and 80’s: Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, also known as Carlos. Alongside an internationally renowned cast and crew, Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramirez (nominated for the Emmy® and Golden Globe® and winner of the Golden Nymph Award) stars in the epic, three-part production by French film director and screenwriter Olivier Assayas (nominated for the Emmy®).

Using a variety of identities and pseudonyms, the highly intelligent and sophisticated assassin manages to evade the complexities of international politics for almost 20 years – all the while creating and running a global network of assassins responsible for the most infamous murders, kidnappings and attacks of the late Cold War years.

An intense biographical look at Carlos’ life as a terrorist, the mini-series was created and written by Dan Franck, along with directors Olivier Assayas andDaniel Leconte; executive production was carried out by Sabine Sidawi-Hamdan, Judy Tossell and Raphael Cohen, and the associate production by Frank Lehmann; Jens Meurer and Daniel Leconte led production.

Though an icon for the extreme left, Carlos is also an opportunistic mercenary manipulated by the powerful secret services of the Middle East. His beginnings as a terrorist date back to 1973, when he becomes involved with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and attempts to assassinate a well-known businessman. From this moment forth, the young Marxist revolutionary begins establishing his nefarious reputation as a terrorist, carrying out countless operations for Palestinian radicals.

After a triple murder and several unsuccessful jobs, Carlos becomes a fugitive from international justice, earning notoriety after his raid on OPEC’s (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) official headquarters, where he takes hostages and kills several people.

The mini-series highlights the actions of Magdalena Kopp (Nora von Waldstatten), a German photographer who becomes a forger of revolutionary documents and later Carlos’ wife; Johannes Weinrich (Alexander Scheer), a German terrorist and Carlos’ right-hand man, acting as a liaison in Berlin, Budapest, Bucharest and Prague; Michel Moukharbel (Fadi Abi Samra), a Lebanese Christian from an influential family who gets involved in the terrorist attacks headed by Carlos’ organization; and Hans-Joachim Klein (Christoph Bach), known as “Angie”, a German revolutionary who participates in the Vienna terrorist attacks with Carlos.
